Janna Sandmeyer Psychotherapy

Individual & Couples Therapy

Gillian Brooke Karp, PhD

I believe that to grow and progress in therapy, we need only a few simple things: a willingness to look inward, curiosity and motivation to change.

My favorite way to do therapy is to work collaboratively with you, to understand what you value and how you want to be in the world.  I draw on contemporary psychodynamic principles to help understand how deeper, historical influences have shaped your life experiences over the years.  Together, we consider unconscious processes, relationship and attachment patterns, defenses or coping mechanisms and the development of your sense of yourself in the world and in relationships. This process helps move you toward new, better patterns of being and relating.

I also use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which focuses on problematic thoughts and behaviors.  Change in CBT happens when we challenge those thoughts and behaviors through logic and by trying new, healthier behaviors.
